Cognitive Systems Foresight- Overview
A collaborative project between computer vision and psychological scientists investigating techniques for recognising faces used by humans and artificial methods used in computer vision.
Marked up image of Tim Cootes.
Aims
-
The development and testing of an appearance-based facial model, able to deal with a full range of rotation and of learning representations a novel face from an ordered sequence of images. It must also be able to include this
face within its model of faces.
-
The development and testing of a probabilistic model of facial behaviour, automatically segmenting a sequence images
into behavioural 'atoms' and then coding both variations within individual atoms and in their order and frequency.
-
The psychological testing of the validity of these models as computational descriptions of human moving face recognition,
with particular attention to issues of facial representation, approached via a cross-cultural paradigm.

Approach
We will evaluate current face recognition technology and compare the failure modes of computer vision methods with the findings of psychological research into human face recognition processing.
